The only member of the NWC who managed to show up was Kema Chikwe, the woman leader, but she too did not spend up to three minutes at the gate as the protesters threatened to beat her up if she attempts entering the premises.

Cairo Ojugboh, who oversees the party in the South-South zone, was also ordered to leave. He obeyed the order and promptly left the party secretariat for the protesters.

The protesters said they came to protest against former minister of state for education and the party’s governorship candidate in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and Uche Secondus, the national vice chairman of the party.

Wike is the anointed governorship candidate of Mrs. Patience Jonathan in Rivers State.

Singing war songs and carrying a mock coffin, the protesters also erected a canopy with which they blocked the entrance to the party’s national secretariat.

No staff was allowed access the office as the three gates leading to the premises were effectively blocked by the protesters.

Some 100 policemen stood nearby and watched as the protesters took over the zone five area of the party secretariat.

The protesters arrived the scene around 6am, but were later dispersed forcefully around 5:20pm by the police who fired life bullets and teargas canisters into the air.

Five of protesters were later arrested.

Nigeria: 50 Female Suicide Bombers on the prowl A female suicide bomber, who was arrested by the vigilante group also known as civilian JTF, revealed, yesterday, that 50 other female suicide bombers have been let loose in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital with a mandate to kill 100,000 persons before the end of December 2014.

A female suicide bomber, who was arrested by the vigilante group also known as civilian JTF, revealed, yesterday, that 50 other female suicide bombers have been let loose in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital with a mandate to kill 100,000 persons before the end of December 2014.

The arrested female bomber disclosed this on a day the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah vowed that Boko Haram will be defeated. This came as former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon charged the army chief and his commanders to urgently correct the negative perception about Nigerian soldiers abandoning their weapons and running away in the midst of the fight against Boko Haram terrorists.

The female suicide bomber was said to have been arrested by civilian JTF at the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri, while another was apprehended at the busy Post Office area of the metropolis, yesterday.

The arrest came barely a day after two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in Maiduguri Market on Monday, killing 22 civilians and injuring 48 others.

Upon their arrest, one of the suicide bombers was said to have confessed before being handed over to security operatives that 50 female members of the sect have been initiated and are ready to wreak havoc in Maiduguri and environs before the end of 2014 .

Following this disclosure, sources said, tension is now very high in the Borno capital as students of the University of Maiduguri had to undergo serious check by security operatives before being allowed into the campus.

It was gathered that already, students have been banned from entering the campus with their vehicles as only lecturers enjoyed this privilege after rigorous checks and identification.

The civilian JTF have also been put on red alert. It would be recalled that, already four female suicide bombers have caused the deaths of over 100 people in two incidents in Maiduguri recently.

Troops repel attacks in Konduga

Meanwhile, attempts to launch fresh attacks in Konduga and Maiduguri have been repelled by troops of the 7 Division in Konduga Local Government area of the state.

Konduga is south east and about 40 kilometres drive from Maiduguri, the state capital. Recently troops in the area with support from civilian JTF repelled insurgents, killing more than 200.

Sources said the insurgents numbering more than 300 armed with sophisticated weapons using Hilux vehicles and motorcycles had an encounter with troops while attempting to overrun Konduga and Maiduguri towns. The insurgents were, however, overwhelmed as the troops killed unspecified number of them before they abandoned some of their vehicles, arms and ammunition.

Another source said: “The attacks on insurgents in Konduga by the military on Monday at about 9 p.m left more than 200 terrorists dead”.

A top military source confirmed the killing of hundreds of insurgents in the failed attack on Konduga town.

He said: “Our troops repelled attack by Boko Haram sect on Konduga Council Area where the insurgents suffered casualties with none of our troops killed or injured”.

Save image of Army – Gowon

In a related development, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has charged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah and his commanders to urgently correct the negative perception about Nigerian soldiers abandoning their weapons and running away in the midst of the fight against terrorists.

Gowon gave the charge just as the Chief of Army Staff, declared that the war against terrorism will be won. “We would be undertaking a review of ongoing operations in the North-East with a view to bringing a speedy end to the reign of terror unleashed on innocent Nigerians by these elements”, the Army Chief said.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Chief of Army Staff Conference in Uyo, Gowon, who was represented by former Lagos State Administrator, General Buba Marwa, said: “Ordinary Nigerians in high and low places have expressed reservations that they are not happy that their military who ought to defend our territorial integrity and protect people from internal and external threat appear to be losing ground to Boko Haram insurgents.

“But from the pictures of Boko Haram seen, apart from being mounted on Toyota vehicles, they look rag-tag — certainly no threat to well-trained and better soldiers of the Nigerian Army. The COAS and commanders need to urgently correct this negative perception about our soldiers who have in the past, a record of professionalism and competence.”

Recalling how he tackled security challenges of the civil war, Gowon said: “At a critical period during the civil war, I had only 500, 000 rounds of ammunition as total reserve for the armed forces. I could not continue with operations with such quantity of ammo, and no money.

“I only relied on some patriotic and committed businessmen in Nigeria who were able to get 15million rounds of ammunition within a very short time on their own account – they were paid later by government.”

While noting that the Federal Government can buy military equipment directly from friendly and obliging governments as he did during the civil war, Gowon said: “The government recently acquired a loan of $1billion for fighting the insurgency. Make demands for equipment from it”.

Continuing, he said: “I have not lost confidence in our armed forces. I want you to retrieve your honour by reversing some of these lapses into successes, losses into victories; negative opinions into positive opinions. I charge you to go all out to flush those insurgents out of our territories, all the way back to where they came from. That is the task the armed forces must accomplish without delay”.

The biggest threat

On his part, Lt. General Minimah noted that the upsurge of terrorism and violent extremism in the North East of the country has remained the most significant threat facing our dear country today.

“The Nigerian Army is aware of the enormity of this national challenge having fought a 30-month civil war to unite Nigeria and taken part in operations to protect the territorial integrity of other countries which faced similar threats.

“In the last 10 months since my assumption of command, our attention has been focused primarily on tackling the insurgency in the North East and other security challenges in the North Central and North West. Our key priorities have been to maintain all round professional readiness, improve the standard of training, modernize our equipment, pay attention to troops’ welfare and enhance force posture.

“During the year, we also developed and implemented new strategies not only to contain current threats but also to better prepare us to combat future security challenges,” Minimah said.

Safety of Nigerians, my priority – Jonathan

Also speaking, President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by the Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau noted that one of the cardinal pillars of the Transformation Agenda is the safety, security and well-being of all Nigerians and other residents irrespective of their tribes or religious affiliations.

“It is a duty that I have devoted my entire being to and resolve towards its attainment. It is in line with my government’s resolve that we are ever committed to provide a safe and enabling environment for all Nigerians to carry out their businesses and contribute to the building of a strong, united, prosperous and stable nation.

“Under my leadership, the Federal Government will continue to provide ready assistance to the armed forces to meet operational needs”.

The President said resources have been made available to ensure recruitment and training of capable army personnel.

YOBE State health officials fear that the capital Damaturu my face an epidemic as a result of the large number of bodies that litter its streets after the Nigerian military successfully repelled a Boko Haram attack on the city yesterday.

YOBE State health officials fear that the capital Damaturu my face an epidemic as a result of the large number of bodies that litter its streets after the Nigerian military successfully repelled a Boko Haram attack on the city yesterday. Early yesterday morning, Boko Haram mounted a ferocious attack on Damaturu shooting sporadically and detonating explosives but the Nigerian Army managed to repel the attack. Fierce fighting followed and many local residents fled through bush paths to neighbouring towns and villages during the battle. Today, many of the refugees have started returning to Damaturu and have been greeted with the sight of corpses on the street. It is estimated that about 100 people died in the fighting and although local residents are pleasantly surprised at the manner in which the military repelled the attack, they now fear the consequences. One resident said: “Kudos must be given to the military for the speed at which they dispatched the Boko Haram boys. It was like the whole earth was going to sink when the Boko Haram boys stormed the town, as the whole place was shaking as they released explosives and were shooting at will, as if their armoury was not exhaustible.” Abba Yusuf, another local who just returned to Damaturu, added: “The greatest fear apart from the Boko Haram boys returning is that of epidemic. There are so many corpses littering the town and we hope something will be done fast to evacuate the corpses.” Already the Yobe State government has expressed gratitude to the military for the prompt response to the distress call of residents. In the past, Boko Haram has successfully overran towns and cities in northeastern Nigeria as the army has fled in the wake of their attacks, leaving local residents to the mercy of the terrorists. – See more at: http://www.nigerianwatch.com/news/5913-damaturu-faces-the-risk-of-epidemic-as-bodies-litter-streets-following-boko-haram-attack#sthash.am9ZUnw1.dduODUSJ.dpuf

300 Militants Killed in Yobe Attack More than 100 Boko Haram members may have been killed in Damaturu, following Monday’s deadly attack on the Yobe State capital. That number could be even higher, as the Hausa service of the BBC is reporting over 300 members

More than 100 Boko Haram members may have been killed in Damaturu, following Monday’s deadly attack on the Yobe State capital.

That number could be even higher, as the Hausa service of the BBC is reporting over 300 members of the militia to have died in the battle.

Our correspondent also learned that thirty three Nigerian policemen and some medical personnel are among those who died in the violence.

The Islamic militants, who arrived in many utility vehicles and motorcycles, deployed many deadly weapons in the onslaught. They burnt down several blocks of buildings at the State University, the MOPOL base, some public schools and many other places.

A hospital source said that over a hundred corpses killed by the military were brought to the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.

She added that some military men and police officers who were injured were also brought in for treatment.

Resident Bukar Yakubu, who spoke to SaharaReporters from Yobe expressed appreciation of the courage of the military. “They really tried even though it was not easy but they killed more than 100 and some of them were captured today,” he stated.

The BBC report said that Nigerian soldiers were jubilating in Damaturu over the victory.

It would be recalled that the Yobe state government yesterday issued a statement in which it commended the military for a great job of repelling the insurgents.

Governor Ibrahi Gaidam also thanked residents for their support and cooperation with security agents and urged them to continue to support the security efforts till the insurgency is brought to an end.

No official confirmation of the casualty figures had been given as of the time of filling this report.

As Sanusi Emerges Emir, Nigeria Military Bans Private Planes from Entering Kano The Nigerian government has banned private planes from landing at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano

As Sanusi Emerges Emir, Nigeria Military Bans Private Planes from Entering Kano

The Nigerian government has banned private planes from landing at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria military, Major-General Chris Olukolade, said the ban was for “security reasons,” but declined to state the nature of the security concerns.

However, a source in the military told an online newspaper that the directive would not be unconnected with Sunday’s crowning of Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano.

“After the Emir was appointed, there were lots of protests from the group supporting the late Emir’s son. The security agencies must have felt that certain actions need to be taken,” the source, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak for the military, said.

Yakubu Dati, the spokesperson for the Nigerian aviation parastatals, said the military usually takes such decisions when there are security concerns.

“We as an authority, we have not banned any plane from landing in Kano. You know there is civil aviation and there is also military aviation which supersedes ours,” Mr. Dati said.

“They don’t consult anybody. They just go ahead with their decision since it is about security,” he added.

The news of the ban came after Umaru Al-Makura, the Nasarawa State Governor, who was flying into the Kano airport from Makurdi on Monday morning, was denied clearance to land by the airport commander.

Earlier on Sunday evening, the chattered plane of the Governor of Rivers State was grounded by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), allegedly from the orders of the president.

British newspaper says Jonathan aborted rescue deal for Chibok girls ‘at the last minute’

The kidnapped schoolgirls would
have regained their freedom by now
but President Goodluck Jonathan
called off a prisoner swap deal with
Boko Haram at the last minute, British
tabloid The Mail on Sunday has reported. Dubai-exiled Nigerian journalist, Ahmad

Salkida — who reportedly fled to the
United Arab Emirates last year following threats to his life on account of his closeness to the militants — was
said to have been appointed by both the government and the extremists to broker an agreement for the release of the girls in exchange for Boko Haram members in detention. “Sources in the Nigerian capital Abuja
described how Shekau had agreed to
bring the girls out of their forest camps in the remote north-east of the country in the early morning and take them to a safe location for the prisoner swap,” the paper wrote.

They would have been dropped off in a village, one group at a time, and left
there while their kidnappers disappeared. There was to be a signal to a mediator at another location to bring in the prisoners.

Curiously, the federal government was
only expected to release 100 “non-
combatant, low-level sympathisers” of
Boko Haram, rather than commanders
and foot soldiers, the newspaper
reported. About 2000 Boko Haram members are said to be in detention. Accused of being a Boko Haram
sympathiser, the Borno-born journalist
has always insisted he only maintains a professional relationship” with certain members of the group whom he knew long before it became violent. However, he was reportedly persuaded by the president’s aides to
embark on a “secretive and dangerous” trip home to meet Shekau, after the president “personally signed a letter of indemnity” protecting him from arrest by security agents.

But while attending the May 17, 2014
Paris terrorism summit with leaders of
four African countries and
representatives of the European Union, United Kingdom, and the United States of America, Jonathan called home to halt the deal, the paper said. The about-face, it is believed, has
angered Shekau, raising fears that the
girl might now be endangered.

The next video we see from the
terrorists could show the girls being
killed one by one,” The Mail on Sunday
quoted an intelligence source as saying. The turnaround may as well spell the end of any peace deal with Boko Haram, as Salkida is about the group’s most- trusted and unbiased go-between with the federal government.

He is probably the only civilian with
access to Shekau. There is trust
between them and Salkida had only one aim — to get the schoolgirls out,” the source further said. “He reported afterwards that the group of girls he saw were alive and well, and being adequately fed and sheltered.

They told him all they wanted was to go home.” Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati was quoted by the newspaper as saying he was not aware of any attempted rescue plan.

Borno government officials, Principal say military lied about rescue of abducted school girls

There is controversy over the rescue of abducted school girls in Borno with the state government and the school principal faulting the military’s claim that most of the pupils have been freed

The claim by military officials in Abuja on Wednesday that 107 abducted girls of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Chibok were freed is a huge lie, Borno government officials, the management of the school and residents have said.

The Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Asabe Kwambura, told PREMIUM TIMES Thursday morning that the military’s claim was false.

“There is nothing in the military statement that is true about our abducted girls,” Mrs. Kwambura said. “Up till now we are still waiting and praying for the safe return of the students; all I know is that we have only 14 of them, and the security people especially the Vigilante and the well meaning volunteers of Gwoza are still out searching for them.”

She continued, ”The military people too are in the bush searching. So we have not received any information that they have gotten the students yet. So let it be clear that all the information passed on the media by the military concerning 107 girls is not true.
“I, as the principal did not tell any body any figure on released students other than what our Governor, His Excellency Kashim Shettima had informed the media.”

The Principal said she was contacted by the military headquarters in Abuja yesterday and some person was asking her to confirm the number of girls released.

”I told them that I don’t want to be seen to be contradicting myself on that because what the governor said was what we know about; and I told them there may be additional rescue of the girls, but up to this moment we have not received any of them apart from what we had before,” the principal said.

” What the governor said is still the true picture of the whole issue and that information given by the military is totally wrong.”

The military spokesperson at the Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade, had Wednesday issued a statement claiming that 107 abducted girls were freed; adding that only eight of the girls were still missing and the military was searching for them.

He also claimed that a member of the Boko Haram sect that participated in the abduction was also nabbed by the military.

Borno state Governor, ashim Shettima was also quoted by the BBC Hausa service this morning faulting the claims of the military.

He reportedly said, “We have recovered 14 of the girls and we have announced a N50 million reward for any credible information that will help us get our girls released and rejoined with their families.”

PREMIUM TIMES also enquired from a top official of the Department of State Service (DSS) in Maiduguri who ordinarily should know about the rescue of the girls.

“We have no such information apart from the 14 that escaped; if there is anything like that, no one would want to hide it from the media; may be the military have their own intel on that, which we probably are not aware of for now,” he said.

Some relatives and parents of the abducted girls said they were not happy with the way the military “is misleading the world about the innocent girls”.

A female senior Civil Servant with the Borno state government, who requested not to be named said, “What kind of nonsense is this for God sake? Why are they playing politics with the lives of these innocent girls; I had just called some of my relatives in Chibok and they told me none of the girls had been released apart from the 14 that escaped back to town. We hope the military is not doing some thing funny with this very sensitive issue”.

When contacted late last night, Mr. Olukolade insisted it was the principal of the school who told the military that only eight girls were now missing
